Chapter One: The Emergence and Concept of Artificial Intelligence

Section One: The Emergence of Artificial Intelligence

The ideas of artificial intelligence began with ancient philosophical questions about the nature of the human mind and whether it is possible to build machines that can think like humans. Plato and Aristotle, for example, discussed the ability to reason logically and use symbols to understand the world (Hamet, P., & Tremblay, 2017: 36), and these philosophical ideas formed the initial foundation upon which the concept of simulating intelligence was built.

Despite having philosophical and intellectual roots, artificial intelligence as an independent field of study officially began in 1956 during the "Dartmouth Conference" organized by John McCarthy and his colleagues, where the goal of the conference was to explore the possibility of developing machines that could simulate human intelligence. This event is considered a major starting point in the history of artificial intelligence, contributing to the initial vision of the field and defining its main objectives (McCarthy et al., 1956: 12).

In the 1960s and 1970s, there was significant interest in artificial intelligence in the field of natural language processing and problem-solving using symbolic programming. This period saw the development of rule-based systems, such as expert systems that sought to simulate human knowledge in specialized fields. With the advancement of computing and the availability of large amounts of data, artificial intelligence has undergone a significant transformation in recent decades, with the emergence of deep learning algorithms that rely on artificial neural networks, allowing machines to learn from data without the need for explicit programming for each step. This development has led to widespread applications in fields such as computer vision, speech recognition, and big data analysis. (Labidi S., Lejouad W., De, 2006: p.2)

Today, artificial intelligence is used in many industries such as healthcare, education, and finance. In medicine, artificial intelligence techniques are used to analyze medical images and diagnose diseases, as well as to improve supply chain efficiency and provide personalized recommendations on e-commerce platforms.

Section Two: Definition of Artificial Intelligence

The term artificial intelligence was first used in 1956 by American researcher McCarthy when he decided to use the phrase Artificial Intelligence as the title for a conference at Dartmouth University, signaling the start of research in artificial intelligence as an independent field distinct from computing and automation sciences. McCarthy then defined artificial intelligence as: "The science and engineering of making intelligent computer programs." (McCarthy, p, 43: 2007)

Many researchers have contributed to defining artificial intelligence, and these definitions have varied based on scientific affiliation, interpretive contexts, and the technological environment in which each researcher emerged.

Mogali In her definition of artificial intelligence, she stated, "Artificial intelligence is based on analyzing and executing intelligent tasks such as thinking, learning new skills, and adopting new situations and problems." (2014, p.25: Mogali)

Tredinnick Proposed a definition of artificial intelligence, which is: "A set of computing techniques and approaches concerned with the ability of computers to make flexible rational decisions in response to unexpected environmental conditions" (Tredinnick, p:37 2017).

Artificial intelligence is defined as: The ability of a computer-controlled device to perform tasks in a human-like manner (Bozkurt & Goksel, 2019, p.225).

Section Three: Types of Artificial Intelligence and Its Applications

Section One: The Emergence of Artificial Intelligence Use in Radio and Television Programs

(Barton & Wade, 2023)

(O\'Connor & Sharma, 2021).

(Henderson & Khan, 2022).

Section Three: Ethical Issues Related to the Use of Artificial Intelligence

( Jobin, A., Ienca, M., & Vayena, E.، 2019: 389-399)

  • Bias and Justice:  One of the prominent ethical issues associated with the use of artificial intelligence is the matter of bias and justice. AI algorithms rely on data to learn and develop their capabilities, and if the data fed into them is biased or unequal, the decisions made by these systems may be unfair or discriminatory. For example, if historical data contains discrimination against a certain group, the system may reinforce this discrimination instead of eliminating it.

  • Privacy:  Many AI applications require the collection of vast amounts of personal data, such as health data, location data, or even individuals' behavioral patterns. This raises questions about how to protect individuals' privacy, especially with the potential for this data to leak or be used in unexpected ways or without users' consent.

  • Responsibility and Accountability: Artificial intelligence technology also raises questions about who is responsible when AI systems make mistakes. For example, if an AI system causes a traffic accident or makes an incorrect medical decision, who should be held accountable? Is it the programmers of the system, the companies that use it, or is the system itself considered an independent entity that should be held accountable?

  • Displacement of Human Jobs: One of the main concerns raised about artificial intelligence is its impact on the job market, as there are fears that the increasing reliance on AI and automation will lead to the loss of many human jobs, especially in sectors that rely on routine and repetitive work. This issue raises ethical questions about how to balance the benefits of technological advancement with protecting job opportunities for individuals.

  • Manipulation and Misinformation: Thanks to advanced AI technologies, it has become easy to create fake content that is difficult to distinguish from reality, such as fake videos and images (Deepfake). This type of technology can be used to manipulate public opinion and spread misinformation, raising questions about the impact of these technologies on trust in media and information.

Despite the enormous benefits that artificial intelligence offers, its use raises a number of ethical challenges that require strong measures to address them. However, it is essential to keep pace with technological developments through an open dialogue about ethical issues, while establishing policies and legal controls that ensure the use of AI in ways that promote justice, privacy, and social responsibility.

Results:

  • The study proved that the use of AI technologies significantly contributes to accelerating the production process of radio and television programs. By automating repetitive tasks such as video editing or text editing and data analysis, it has become possible to reduce the time required to prepare programs.

  • The results showed that applying AI technologies, such as audio and image analysis, helps improve production quality, whether in terms of sound, image, or interaction with content, contributing to delivering high-quality programs that meet audience expectations.

  • Artificial intelligence has managed to introduce new elements of creativity in program production, especially through trend analysis and providing suggestions for new topics based on audience interests. Additionally, AI-powered tools contribute to improving scriptwriting processes and story development in innovative ways.

  • The research confirmed that AI technologies enable media organizations to customize content according to audience interests. By analyzing viewer and listener behavior, content can be adjusted and presented individually to align with each user's preferences, enhancing the viewing and listening experience.

  • Thanks to AI technologies, media organizations can enhance real-time interaction with the audience through smart chat applications and virtual assistants that can provide quick and immediate responses to audience inquiries during or after program broadcasts.

  • The results revealed that there are ethical and legal challenges that must be addressed when using AI in program production, such as intellectual property rights, privacy, and the role of humans in overseeing processes conducted by AI.

Recommendations:

  • Media organizations should invest in AI technologies such as data analysis and natural language processing to support scriptwriting and content editing processes, which will increase production efficiency and program quality.

  • Direct media organizations to provide specialized training programs for radio and television workers to teach them how to effectively use AI-powered tools, in order to integrate these technologies into daily production processes.

  • Media organizations should strive to develop interactive tools based on AI to customize the viewing and listening experience, allowing the audience to interact directly with content in more innovative and personalized ways.

  • Clear regulations should be established to monitor the use of AI in media production, ensuring that the use complies with privacy and ethical standards, especially in data collection and analysis.

  • It is beneficial for media organizations to leverage AI technologies to analyze audience behavior and develop programs that meet their changing needs, which will enhance competitiveness in the growing media market.

  • Media companies must invest in research and development to seek innovative solutions to the challenges of AI in the media field, such as improving voice and image recognition and processing different languages with high accuracy.
